The city of Milton recently finished phase 1 of their newest trail system.
Phase 1 Completed Earth Day 2022:
The City of Milton, Georgia opened a 1.15 mile section of an estimated 2.5 mile loop in the North Woods section of their newest recreation area, Milton City Park and Preserve. The trail is made of crushed gravel offering a softer surface and break from the abundant paved greenways and boardwalks in the neighboring cities. The master plan calls for a total of 7.3 miles of walkable trails consisting of boardwalk, crushed gravel, natural soil, and pavement. Consideration for horses, given the equestrian identity of the city played a part in that decision.
In addition to the trails, the park features an active area that makes use of existing infrastructure such as the Country Club, Pool, Splash Pad, and Tennis Courts. In later phases, the city plans to add a Pergola to the back of the country club, an additional set of Tennis Courts, and a water slide. The interior of the Country Club will also be renovated to change the Kitchen to a Snack Bar and make the space more functional by changing the layout of the Dining Room.
History
In 2018 voters approved a $25 million bond to purchase the old Milton Country Club to convert into a park. Milton gave voters a chance to name the new park settling on Milton City Park and Preserve. Extensive studying showed that the old golf course was in disrepair with much of the old infrastructure, with the exception of the club, needing replaced or removed including items like boardwalks and golf cart paths. Work began in August of 2021 and the city approved an agreement with Southern Conservation Trust for a land management plan. Work on Phase 1 was completed in April of 2022 with further additions planned.
